| Bethesda Bicycle Spirit Award | | |
In conjunction with the regional Bike to Work Day, Bethesda Transportation Solutions sponsors the Bicycle Commuter Spirit Awards. The awards recognize downtown Bethesda employees who are dedicated to biking to work.
Each year we ask for your help in finding two commuters devoted to two-wheeled bicycled transportation. The first award is for the Most Committed Bicycle Commuter, an employee who bikes to work on a consistent basis. The second award is for the Longest Distance Commuted by Bicycle - for that dedicated bike commuter who goes the distance!
2010 Winners
Most Committed Cyclist - Brian Barnes
Brian Barnes currently works for the CoStar Group and has been biking competitively since moving to the DC area 12 years ago. He currently races for DC Velo, a local amateur cycling team based out of Washington. He has been commuting by bicycle for the better part of 5 years says that it’s definitely a great way to start his day. His commute is about 30 minutes total, about the same amount of time it takes by car and he enjoys every minute of it! After work, he is on the road for more training miles.
Longest Distance Commuted by Bicycle - Christoph Mueller
Chris has lived in Montgomery County with his wife Alexis since 1988. He works at OPNET Technologies in Bethesda. Chris is also a member of the National Capital Velo Club. He has been riding a bicycle at least 5,000 miles a year since 1980. Since August of last year, Chris has ridden his bike to work every day, missing one week during the great blizzard. His current bike route has him commuting about 16 miles each way.
2009 Winners
Most Committed Cyclist – Jim Fulmer
Jim bikes seven miles from his home in Silver Spring to his office at Fidelis Security Systems in downtown Bethesda, about a 25 minute ride each way, every day rain or shine (or snow, or ice, etc.). He and his wife share one car for their family, so he uses his bike for a lot of things that would otherwise put his car on the road – Sunday farmers market visits, and errands on the way home from work.
Longest Distance Commuted By Bicycle – Jean-Luc Park
Jean-Luc’s bicycle commute from Falls Church, Virginia is 16 miles to his office at Calvert in downtown Bethesda. Calvert is a very bike-friendly company and provides bike racks and showers to their employees, which Jean-Luc enjoys.
