Why "Pool"?

BTS is here to help

Carpooling and vanpooling is not only "green" for the environment, it's "green" for your wallet! It's easy and BTS will do nearly all the work for you!

Did you know carpoolers can save as much as $85 a month in parking alone? Factor in gas at $3.00/gallon and maintenance and that adds up to hundreds of dollars a month! A carpool with just two occupants is eligible for reduced monthly parking rates and the larger the carpool, the larger the discount. So don't delay, call us and we'll help you find a new way to commute.

Share this information with your employer and we'll help get everyone on board!

For more information, contact Allison Kemp at AKemp@bethesda.org or 301-656-0868 x121.

Join a "Pool"

If you've ever thought about joining a carpool or a vanpool, but didn't know where to start, BTS can help! We'll match you with other "poolers" commuting to Bethesda and work with you to find an arrangement that fits your lifestyle.

Step 1
Get your commuter "matchlist." Just send us your point of origin, work location, and your hours and BTS will generate your "matchlist".  Contact Allison Kemp at AKemp@bethesda.org or call
301-301-656-0868 x121.

Step 2
Contact your matches. BTS makes introductions easy! Before you even get your list, we contact each potential match to let them know that someone may be interested in driving with them. So when you call to discuss carpooling they are expecting you. This gives you a better opportunity to get to know them, talk about specifics, and maybe even meet them for coffee.

Step 3
Sign up for Guaranteed Ride Home. Register with Commuter Connections online or call
1-800-745-RIDE (7433) to ensure you have a guaranteed FREE ride home in the event of an emergency.

Step 4
Apply for a discounted Carpool Parking Permit.  Even a carpool with as few as two occupants is eligible for reduced monthly parking rates, and the larger the carpool the larger the discount. Carpoolers can save as much as $85 a month!

Step 5
Check out these important "Pooling" Tips! They're sure to help make your pool a great experience.

Note: In order to provide the carpool matching service, it will be necessary to furnish applicants some information from your registration form, but only the information that is required to facilitate matches. Bethesda Transportation Solutions makes no background checks or other verification of the information that it receives from applicants. BTS will not be liable for disclosing this information nor will it be liable because of your participation.

Tips for "Poolers"

  1. Decide who's driving and when. How many days will you ride together? Which ones? Will you alternate driving duties each day, each week or have one person do it all?
  2. Set ground rules. Agree up-front on issues like choice of radio stations, smoking, eating in the car and side trips.
  3. Decide on a time and place to meet. Will you pick each other up at home or meet at another location such as a Park & Ride Lot? Give each other 5-10 minutes for unexpected delays.
  4. Figure out the costs. Commuters that share the driving/riding do not have to exchange money since everyone drives an equal amount. In carpools where one commuter will do all the driving, the commuter(s) riding should pay an equal share of the driver's vehicle operating costs based on this chart:
  5. Exchange important information. Just in case, share emergency contact information before starting your carpool.
  6. Register with Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH)! Don't forget to sign-up with GRH to ensure you have a FREE way home in the event of an unexpected emergency!
  7. Give plenty of notice if you'll be away. Let your carpool partner(s) know about vacations and personal days well in advance, so they can make other arrangements. If you are taking a sick day or have a personal emergency, notify others right away.
  8. Call your insurance company. By reducing your driving miles, you may be eligible for a reduction in your insurance premium.
  9. Take care of your car and the people in it. Keep your car well-serviced and clean.
  10. Most importantly, DRIVE SAFE to always make your carpool partner(s) feel they are in good hands.

FAQ for "Poolers"

What happens when I complete a Rideshare Application?
We enter the information you provide into our regional database. We then match you with others who have similar commuting patterns and send you a personalized match list within a few days.

How do I use this information to start or join a carpool or vanpool?
The list will provide you with contact names and telephone numbers. You can then begin contacting the individuals on your list to locate the most appropriate match(es).

I feel funny about calling perfect strangers out of the blue. How do I introduce myself?
BTS has taken care of the 'surprise factor'. By the time you receive your match list, each person on the list has already been contacted and informed that you may be calling to join their carpool. You will only receive the names and numbers of individuals who are still looking for pooling partners.

Will other people get information about me?
All information you provide is used for rideshare matching purposes only. Other rideshare applicants will receive your name, telephone number, work address and work hours if their home, work location and hours are similar to yours. Park & Ride sites and neighborhood names are typically used as starting locations unless you specify your home address as the start point.

How long will my name remain in the database?
BTS staff will follow-up with you shortly after your match list is sent and again approximately six months later to determine your interested in remaining in the database. You may contact us at any time to have your name deleted from the database.

How can I get more information about carpooling, vanpooling or public transit?
Contact Allison Kemp at AKemp@bethesda.org or 301-656-0868 x21.

What if I decide that I don't care for who I've been matched with?
This is not a marriage. You are more than welcome to contact BTS at anytime to get re-matched.

I already carpool with my spouse. Are we eligible for carpool benefits?
Yes! Any two people who carpool together and both work in downtown Bethesda can apply for a carpool application.
